With 25 registered votes at the nomination, about 16 votes went to Julien Lamarche after a great speech, 4 went to none of the above and the rest to Akbar.
At best, Akbar Manoussi picked up 6 votes at the nomination. However, including the advance polling, Mr. Manoussi, who clearly brings a wealth of experience to the Ottawa-Vanier Greens, won 31 to 19. Mr. Manoussi had the contacts, I had the vision (although, as John Ogilvie states on his GPC blog, Mr. Manoussi will bring insight and passion to the debate on Afghanistan).
I will be staying on as technical assistant to the Ottawa-Vanier Greens. I am very happy to have helped the riding association in walking the talk of the Green Party’s policy on open source.
For those who are disappointed with the outcome of the nomination, I encourage you all to become members of Fair Vote Canada. This nomination brought in incredible diversity. But we need that in parliament. Both Akbar and I were very eager to pull in members from our respective communities (I, Franco-Ontarian and Akbar, Muslim). In the end, only one representative could be selected. In STV districts or as list candidates under MMP, we could have achieved a proper representation of both communities. Please, join Fair Vote Canada.
A green party member wrote to asking what was my position on population control in order to address the impacts of human civilization. Although the tone of his question seemed to suggest he was looking for regulation, the approach suggested in my answer was one of empowerment of women.
Bonjour (green party member),
Thanks for writing to me.
As this most recent blog post on monbiot.com suggests, I think women education & empowerment, access to contraceptives and sex education
(for both men & women) are the best way to control populations. “As societies become more prosperous and women acquire better opportunities, they seek smaller families.” –
