VoteForMMP.ca calls upon John Tory to reject appointment of MMP candidates

27 September 2007
Filed under: Représaentation proportionelle — Julien @ 7:56

TORONTO, Sept. 26 - The VoteForMMP campaign is calling upon Conservative Party Leader John Tory to clarify his approach to nominating candidates under the new system.  According to a CP wire story, Mr. Tory yesterday repeated the misleading suggestion that province-wide candidates under the new MMP electoral system would be “appointed” rather than elected. “I think the whole notion of having appointed people may be heading in the opposite direction that we should,” Mr. Tory is reported to have said. Two students at Central Kings Rural High School fought back against bullying recently, unleashing a sea of pink after a new student was harassed and threatened when he showed up wearing a pink shirt.

Avaaz.org on Baird’s plan

19 September 2007
Filed under: Changement cl, Environnement — Julien @ 4:35

From an e-mail I received from Avaaz.org:

The Canadian government is breaking its own environmental laws, and could get away with it if we don’t act within 24 hours. Last June, Parliament passed a law confirming our legal obligation to comply with the Kyoto Protocol, and gave a heel-dragging Harper government 60 days to show how they would do it. Harper’s plan is out, and meets Kyoto’s targets 13 years too late – it clearly breaks the law.Canadians are irate over this, but somehow everyone failed to notice the official public consultation period on the law, which ends tomorrow. The comments that Environment Canada receives in this period will be admissible in court, when the Harper government is brought before a judge on this. If there are no comments, the government will claim in court that the public supports its bogus plan. This argument has worked before, and we must not let it happen again. Please send a quick message to Environment Minister Baird, and tell everyone you know to act right away

After:

  • The TV network editors still showing contempt for democracy in Ontario;
  • The Ontario NDP is included and they are polling at less than 10% higher than the greens;
  • The greens in other provinces are included.

I decided to phone instead of just sign petitions. Here are the phone numbers of the various TV networks and my success so far in switchboard land. The name in parenthesis is the person you want to try to reach.  Be firm but respectful.

The main goal is to get as many people to call. Tell your friends!

Once you have phoned, post your comment here.

Wildcat strikes in Alberta

Filed under: Justice sociale, Syndicat — Julien @ 0:53

From The Canadian Press:

The giant Petro-Canada upgrader project in Edmonton was crippled for several days last week after unionized workers refused to cross picket lines set up by carpenters and other tradesman seeking higher wages but unable to stage a legal strike.

Alberta legislation passed two decades ago says that if 75 per cent of the province’s two dozen building trade unions have settled their contracts, the others must follow suit without a strike or lockout - using an arbitrator if necessary.

So if you’re union dissagrees it still has to back to work?

In a time when our lives are increasingly dependent on technologies, it is important we take the time to consider the impact of technology on our lives, and the importance of ensuring technology isn’t used to limit us, but rather to take us further along a path of opportunity, innovation and freedom for all people.

Food additives fire up children’s hyperactivity

6 September 2007
Filed under: Santé — Julien @ 17:28

As we shift away from the industrial economy that brought us highly processed food, the service economy will bring us healthier food.

Certain common artificial food colourings and additives are fuelling hyperactivity in children, a British study has found.

While some children in the test groups showed little or no response, the results were still significant enough for Britain’s Food Standards Agency to issue a warning several hours after the study’s release urging parents of hyperactive children to avoid foods with multiple additives.
