A green party member wrote to asking what was my position on population control in order to address the impacts of human civilization. Although the tone of his question seemed to suggest he was looking for regulation, the approach suggested in my answer was one of empowerment of women.
Bonjour (green party member),
Thanks for writing to me.
As this most recent blog post on monbiot.com suggests, I think women education & empowerment, access to contraceptives and sex education
(for both men & women) are the best way to control populations. “As societies become more prosperous and women acquire better opportunities, they seek smaller families.” – http://www.monbiot.com/archives/2008/02/26/pro-death/
I think we have heard repeatedly on this committee that one of the greatest challenges to copyright is the advent of digital media, and that this in fact seems totally insurmountable and uncontrollable because people are downloading intellectual property of creators and artists on iPods and everything they can. That has left us with a huge copyright vacuum.
These comments are akin to saying “Everybody has access to water, so we need to restrict access to water by privatizing it”.
